About Read in Romaji

Read in Romaji is a local browser extension that detects Japanese text (kanji, hiragana, katakana) on webpages and overlays romaji reading guides so you can read Japanese with less friction. It processes pages entirely in your browser using a bundled morphological analyzer and dictionary-based tokenizer, injects romaji as non-destructive <ruby> annotations, and never sends page text to a server. Works offline and can be toggled on or off per page.

Key Features

  • Local text processing with a bundled morphological analyzer — no text sent to servers
  • Dictionary-based, word-level tokenization for more accurate romaji readings
  • Non-destructive DOM injection using <ruby> annotations so copied text remains original Japanese
  • Dual Mode overlay to show or hide romaji above Japanese text
  • Works offline and supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave on desktop

Who is this for?

Japanese language learners and casual readers who want romaji guidance when reading Japanese web content.
