Glossary

What is hreflang?

An attribute that tells search engines which language or regional version of a page to show to which users.

Each language version should list every alternate, including itself, plus an x-default fallback. Annotations must be reciprocal or they're ignored.

hreflang is used by Google and Yandex; Bing relies more on the content-language meta tag.

Why it matters when you launch

If you launch localized landing pages, add hreflang so the Spanish page ranks in Spain instead of competing with your English page.
