Glossary

What is a canonical URL?

The preferred URL for a page, declared with <link rel="canonical">, so search engines consolidate duplicates into one version.

The same content often lives at several URLs: with and without trailing slashes, tracking parameters, or sorted views. A canonical tag tells search engines which one to index.

Canonicals are a strong hint, not a command. Google may pick a different canonical if signals disagree.

Why it matters when you launch

If you syndicate your launch post to Medium or dev.to, set the canonical back to your own blog so your site gets credit.
